The Bluefin Tuna occurs in the subtropical and temperate waters of the north Pacific Ocean, the north Atlantic Ocean and in the Mediterranean and Black Seas. The Bluefin is a pelagic, schooling and highly migratory species. This is the largest of all tunas. During spawning a giant female bluefin tuna can shed more than 25 million eggs. Bluefin tuna are an extremely important game and food fish. Overfishing is causing a rapid decline in bluefin tuna populations. Mike Leach, former president of The International Game Fish Association reports that conservation of bluefin tuna is of extreme importance, and that action must be taken immediatley to prevent bluefins from becoming endangered.
